ADCOA Choir members invited to the Darwin Synphony Ochestra
[July 29, 2008]

Dr. Martin Jarvis OAM, the Artistic Director of Darwin Synphony Ochestra has invited ADCOA Choir members to sing in his concert (see below), in partly celebrating the Chinese involvement in the mining in Pine Creek on Saturday 9 August 2008. ADCOA choir members will sing a 10-minute Medley - Themes of passion for the honorable concert audiences as follows:

Themes of passion - Medley

The first song reflects the passion for saving the world. The story is based on a contemporary martial art fiction written by a famous Chinese writer in Hong Kong, Kim Yung (金庸). The second one is about the true love between husband and wife. The last song praises the joy of having good friends who could share the same passion in singing.

We look forward to seeing you in Pine Creek.

Thank you.

The Yeung's Female Generals

About 800 years ago, the Han people of China were often invaded by the nomads from the northern part of China. The resistance from the Hans was strong but not their corrupt emperors (Sung Dynasty) who used to sacrifice the land and people in return for temporary truces. However, legends were gererated during the people's struggle with the foreign invaders. One of the famous legends was the Yeung's family. In their decades of fighting, the family had lost all their male members leaving only the widows. The Yeung's women continued the resistance. This story is seeen as one of the most popular dramas about the Yeung's family of female generals - how Bo and ying met on a battlefield and fell in love at first sight. Young General Bo meets Ying who later becomes his wife and also one of the most powerful female generals of the Yeung Family. Contrary to Chinese traditions, Ying, as the female, was the one who proposed the marriage that indicated her unusual courage and determination for landing her prize catch.

The casts for the Yeung's Female Generals are Anne Hughes as Ying (穆桂英) and Louis Wong as Bo (楊宗保)

Moon Worshippers

It is one of the many love stories that depicts the subtle ways of love expresssion by Chinese women for their Mr-Right-Could-Be. It is also a story about the power of true love. During Sung Dynasty 800 years ago, China was frequently invaded by the Nomads. In one invasion, Scholar Jian met Nan, the daughter of the Defence Minister Wang who lost contact with her family in a chaotic retreat. Both young people fell in love with each other while escaping the invaders and got married. After the nomads were defeated, Nan reunited with her father who was unhappy with his poor son-in-law. Wang forced their separation. A few years later, Jian changed his identity and eventually succeed to become a court official. Without knowing Jian was his ex son-in-law, Wang wanted his daughter to marry this new official with a promising future. However, Nan believed that she should be faithful to her ex-husband. As a gesture of protesting the arranged marriage and demonstrating her faithfulness, Nan decided to committed suicide after worshipping the Moon. Moon worshipping was a common ritual among Chinese young girls who were hoping for a good marriage. Dramatically, Jian and Nan bumped into each other at the Moon Temple. The love story ended with a perfect happy ending – Wang admitted his mistake and the couple reunited. This opera extract depicts how Jian and Nan fall in love with each other during the chaotic retreat. The casts for the Moon Worshippers are Anne Hughes as Jian and Winnie Wong as Nan.
